Uncertainty Experts Hold a date

After Procrastination Nation

Same technology.Oppositeexperience.

If Procrastination Nation struck a chord, this is the next step. Uncertainty Lab is a three-hour, in-person, immersive session for teams of up to 50. Using validated scientific scales, it measures your team before and after. On average, rooms leave with a 20% increase in their tolerance for uncertainty and a 15% drop in their need for closure: the urge to grab any answer just to end the not-knowing.

01 / The pattern

AI gave an old habit a new disguise

By 2023, eight in ten of us responded to uncertainty with some form of procrastination. That was before most people had heard of ChatGPT.

AI didn't create the habit. It gave it somewhere new to hide. 62% of professionals in our research had put off an AI tool they believed would help them. Roughly three quarters said their organisation encouraged them to experiment.

Permission alone doesn't explain it.
Uncertainty does.

02 / The finding that changes the brief

It's an uncertainty problem, not a skills problem

You can't close that gap with another training module. Tolerance for uncertainty isn't fixed, and it isn't built with information. It's built by experiencing your own response, with other people, and finding out you can move through it.

3x

People with low tolerance for uncertainty are three times as likely to see AI as a threat.

03 / What Uncertainty Lab is

Three hours.
Your team.
Their own numbers.

Uncertainty Lab is a live, in-person session for a team: your leadership team, or the people leading the change. It combines documentary storytelling, behavioural science and live experiments developed by the immersive theatre company Punchdrunk. Your team doesn't hear about the response to uncertainty. They feel their own, in the room, and work on it together.

Under pressure, low tolerance for uncertainty tends to show up in one of three states. Each comes with a tool your team can use the same week. Fear gets the most time, because it's where most teams start.

Fear

Feels like: self-doubt, imposter syndrome, putting things off.

The move: notice where the fear sits in your body, then weigh it against the regret of not acting. For most people, the regret is heavier.

Becomes action

Fog

Feels like: indecision, backward-looking plans, asking for one more opinion.

The move: catch the moment your thinking closes down, and ask the question that opens it back up.

Becomes agility

Stasis

Feels like: lost momentum, restlessness, quiet burnout.

The move: picture the decision ahead clearly enough to feel it, then trust your gut, but only in the right conditions.

Becomes connection

Along the way, your team names its own safety behaviours: the habits that feel like they're helping, and quietly make things worse. Some of them look remarkably like work. Every reflection is private. Each person gets theirs back by email, and nothing is shared with their employer.

04 / How it works

Before, during and after

  1. 01

    Before

A short briefing call about what's actually stalling. Your team completes a five-minute anonymous survey, so the session opens with their own picture of uncertainty on screen.

  2. 02

    On the day

A short assessment at the start. Three hours of live work. The same assessment at the end, with the room's before and after shown live.

  3. 03

    After

Everyone gets their own results. A few weeks later we sit down with your senior team to go through what the data showed: where confidence is high, where it's fragile, and where two people read the same decision in completely different ways.

What your team leaves with

  • A shared language for what uncertainty does to decisions, short enough to use in Monday's meeting
  • Three tools, one for each state
  • Their own results, individually and as a team
  • A debrief that turns a good session into a decision about what's next

Absolutely outstanding, one of the most thoughtful and impactful workshops we've ever had.

"Sam and Katherine didn't deliver something off the shelf, they invested the time to co-create with us, tailoring the content so precisely that it felt as though they already knew the leaders in the room. The mix of data, live measurement of progress, and bold stories that challenged our perspectives pushed us out of our comfort zone in the best possible way."

Dr Vivian Mohr, President, Bauer Media Audio
"The Uncertainty Masterclass is an extraordinary feat of scientific storytelling and insight. In a context of high ambiguity and uncertainty, this session became an essential part of the toolkit for our leaders and teams!"
Rich Waterworth, General Manager EMEA, TikTok
"Sam is not only a formidable speaker; he also demonstrated an exceptional ability to pick up on details about our organisation and the reality of uncertainty we navigate... His ability to weave these insights into his presentation made it even more relevant and impactful."

If you're the one who has to make the case

You don't need to sell the idea from scratch. What's usually missing is the ammunition for the conversation with whoever signs off the budget.

Hold a date and we'll give you what you need for that conversation: the research partnership, client outcomes you can reference, and a straight answer on what a session for your team would involve, before you're asked to commit.

Questions worth asking

"I believe in this. How do I get my leadership team to?"

You don't have to make that case alone. Hold a date and we'll give you what tends to land internally: the UCL partnership, outcomes at organisations your board will recognise, and a plain answer on scope and format.

"We've already done resilience training."

Resilience training asks people to bounce back from what's already happened. Uncertainty Lab works on what's happening in the room right now, applied to your team's real decisions.

"Is this an L&D initiative?"

It can sit there if that's where it fits. Most leadership teams who bring us in fund it from a change or transformation budget instead, because it addresses what's stalling delivery, not a training gap.

"How do we know it will work for our team?"

If you were in the masterclass, you've felt how this lands. If you've read the report, you've seen the pattern. Uncertainty Lab uses the same live approach with your team, built from their own responses, not a template.

"We're not ready to commit to a bigger programme."

Uncertainty Lab isn't a taster for something else. It's a complete session with its own outcome, including the debrief. If it makes sense to go further once you've seen your team's results, that conversation happens then, not before.

"Is this an AI session?"

No. AI is where uncertainty is showing up most right now, so it's where we started. The Lab works on the response underneath, which shows up in every change your team is carrying.

Don't put this one off. Hold a date for your team.

Tell us a little about your team and when you're thinking. We'll come back within two working days with dates, a straight figure and what happens next. Clarity comes after action, not before.
